  1. 19/03/20 Cut lane 0700-0800 Sand Martin 1(my first!) Gt crested grebe 35 main water bodies. Avocet2 Main bay. 1 cettis singing (low Holland new territory?) 1100-1300 Flashes with J.Buxton Spoonbill 1 (moat roosting) Gt egret – mobile. And presumably same cc Marsh harrier. Distinctive- extensive cream area on upperwing covs and on mantle assumed 2nd cal. Yr. Curlew 1. Wigeon 25.

  3. 18/03/20 am. Moat Spoonbill (subad) Gt egret 5 l.egrets and juv corms in nest. Main bay 4 avocet. Cut lane 2 pr kingfisher 2 oy. Few chiffs, goldcrest and treecreeper

  4. 17/03 early am. Cut lane area. 4 Avocets. 2+ Chiffchaff. Singing Goldcrest and Treecreeper. Red Kite low over village.

  5. Spoonbill sleeping in the Heronry, at the Moat. Great White Egret on the flashes, attended by 4 Little Egrets and 4 Herons. 4 Avocets on the Islands out from Bob Dickens Hide. Quite a few Chiffchaffs around the site now. 2 Oystercatchers also on the flashes.

  7. 16/03/20 am. Moat- Spoonbill roosting c1300 at least- sub-adult. Cormorants with young in nest. New flash- Gt white egret.

  8. C450 pink feet n/NW this am(5 parties). 4 Little egrets flashes. 80 fieldfare around most & hickson’s.3 red kites c15 buzzards, 1 sparrowhawk & kestrel o/head.

  9. 11/03/20. Quiet. 2+ Red kites and 10+ Buzzard peregrine 2. Best bird was a Redshank (flying over) per Keith Boyer. 6 Oystercatcher and 2 Curlew. Cettis by sluice gates. Water back filling again thru sluice gates. Flashes ditches- RSPB has no plans to continue the ditch clearing that was interrupted by the floods.

  13. 07/03/20am 1 red kite, 12+ buzzard. 6 Oystercatcher. Bittern gave brief grunt on North lagoon. Counted 26 grey heron nests from viewpoint. No sign any avocets on hickson’s.
    1700-1800- no large gulls / Black headed gulls roosting.

  14. 03/03/20 am.No reports of waxwing last couple of days. On flood- Gt Egret. 90 Shoveler 40 Wigeon. 6 Curlew & 4 Oystercatcher. Cettis See lagoon and sponsa pool.c5000 starling at dusk.

    No reports from birders of Waxwing. Quiet. Willow tit & Kingfisher by river nr Iron Bridge. Grey Wag bulholme. 3 Gr wood between iron bridge and Stones. Grey Wag by Bulholme. On flood. 7 oystercatcher. 5 Curlew c30 Wigeon. Cettis singing nr Bulls on test. 2 Brown Hare north Flashes.

  16. Waxwing still on Riverside by big copse in big bend in river. On flood 1 l.egrer, 30 Wigeon, 4 Oystercatcher & 6 Curlew. O/hd 6+ buzzard. 2 Grey wags by canal.

  20. 06/02/20 Main Bay roost 1600 to 1715. Herring Gull c2000 – could nt pick out any LBB’s. Merlin overhead at c1600hours flew over river towards Fryston then away to wards Brotherton.and lost to view.

      • 14/02 Access: .Newton lane open from Fairburn until New Flash (ie no access from Barnsdale road- use Back Newton lane.) Riverbank accessible from Cut lane. Wellies needed for Charlie’s Hide.
        0830-1130 Pink footed goose c600 nw. Maybe Keith b got exact number with boc total. He also had a Bittern and Grt Egret. Curlew 11 flashes

  27. 22/01/20-Gull roost. Iceland gull (juv) Herring gull 2000+, Lbb 1. Reported earlier Gw egret, Marsh harrier (male) ,blackcap VC feeders. Pink footed goose c75 west at c1530hrs. Sightings per, vp,Js,jmb,bvdv.jh.

  28. Gull Roost 21/01.Iceland Gull 1st/2nd winter found by Mark D & Bert VBV this evening. Extensive pale bill base but in fading light iris appeared dark. So could nt age with certainty.
    c5000 Herring gulls with apart from Main Bay a large number also on New Flash.

  29. Lin Dike area treecreeper, goldcrest, kingfisher, 13 shelduck, goldeneye, 6 goosander, 2 greenfinch, 2 peregrine, common gull, gt sp woodpecker and roe deer. Flashes frozen over.

  30. No sign of any whitefronts at village end 1015 to 1115 hrs. All of grey lags ( c225) appeared to be on view. Kingfisher performed cut lane. 8 buzzard and 1 red kites up. Kb reported whooper being bullied by couple of mute swans on flashes. Gt egret still about.

  31. 15/01/20 Main bay gull roost 1500 hrs to 1630hrs. 5000 Herring gull. No sign whitefronts but as walked back after dark grey lags had moved off village bay island and moved onto water but too dark to check them again. Lot of kingfisher activity- cut lane & main bay. Also Chiffchaff down cut lane. 40 goosander on cut area.

  35. From Lin Dike over the coal tips and back: Willow Tit, Skylark on the coal tips, Cettis heard there, Bearded Tit heard and seen briefly. Another birdwatcher saw a Bittern in flight on the top. Back to Lin Dike hide 2 Great White Egret. At least 5 Little Egret dotted about. Numerous Shelduck, Water Rail calling behind the hide on other side of the dike.

  37. 10/01/20 reports include 180 pink feet overhead. Gt white egret flashes & Stonechat on se lagoon. Gull roost disappointing. About 750 Herring gulls present. Extreme skitty and kept flying round- left at 1545hrs. Uni

  38. 09/01/20 2kingfisher by sluice gates down cut this pm. Notice river high and water pouring into reserve. Env agency seem unable to fix it? Will inform rspb. Gull roost c3000 Herring gull. Mark d reported 20 redpolls & 2 siskin in VC area.c4 little egrets village end and gt egret on flashes. Cut spit and island been cut so better outlook from Charlie’s hide.

  39. Rangering on Jan 7th. Quite warm and feeling “springish”. Quiet on the bird front. Best were :-
    Song Thrush and Nuthatch at Visitor Centre feeders. Siskin and Redpolls in the Alders around the Discovery trail. 2 Willow Tit on Visitor Centre feeders, plus 1 at Pickup Hide. Common Gull at Big Hole. Kingfisher at its screen, plus a fox on the bank nearby.

  41. 02/01/20 Flashes quiet for wildfowl. Just Gt egret & whooper of note – about 12 wigeon. Mixed flock of 100+ redwing/fieldfare in sheepfields. No sign short eared owl reported yesterday.
    Gull roost from 1500hrs -Caspian gull 1st winter in early but birds agitated and couldn’t refind it when birds re-settled on water. Left about 1600hrs by which time c3500 Herring gulls in roost.
