Glossy ibis on flood between Hickson’s flash intermittently until c1030 hrs. Then seen to fly west towards Allerton Bywater at 1230 habing disappeared for 1 hours.
Also cc marsh harrier, c40 Lapwing,c30 Curlew and c30 wigeon in general area.

A lesser white fronted goose was on main bay in amongst the grey lag flock at lunchtime. 8 Cattle egret and 3 Great White egrets on flashes.
Small numbers of Redwing and Fieldfare around .
25 Pink geet and 6 Dunlin flew over Lagoons but nothing of note on the water bodies.

Lagoons – 2 juv Water rail and 6 Common tern.
Flashes – Green sandpiper, 5 Black -tailed Godwit, Spoonbill , 2 Great white egrets, 10+ Red Kites, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and 2 Hobby.
Cut Lane 1 Lesser whitethroat amongst tit/ warbler flock (which were mainly Chiffchaffs.)

Great White Egret on Spoonbill Flash this evening. Also numerous Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Herring Gulls and Black-headed Gulls. A single Med Gull was there also but didn’t stick around and flew off West. Kestrel over the flashes, Peregrine on pylon 11 and Buzzard on pylon 10.

Yesterday evening (19th)
Drake eclipse Garganey on Spoonbill Flash near Mangroves. Also 2 Common Sandpipers, 3 Oystercatcher, 4 adult Common Terns with 7 fledged young and a Kestrel. 8 Spoonbills (looked a mixture of adults and juvs) took flight circled and headed off South 3 birds returned.

11/07/23 0830-1300 At least 12 common sand & 3 Green sandpiper across reserve. Cut area- 1 Great white egret . Lagoons – 2 Black -neckec Grebe (on west lagoon)
Moat Spoonbill (2nd ringed bird still present – green, black +flag & green on right tibia awaiting feed back details from database).’Still 20 juv little egrets about. Female yellow wagtail.

Wheatear on fence between New Flash and Spoonbill Flash (Keith Boyer), Peregrine on pylon North of flashes. Male Marsh Harrier over Flashes, Cream Crown Marsh Harrier over New Flash & Juv type Marsh Harrier over cedrics. Kestrel above Arrow Lane, several Buzzards across whole site and Red Kite North of Main Bay. Mixed flock of 30+ Redwings and Fieldfares flew north over Flashes. 9 Yellowhammer in field off Beckfield Lane, Kingfisher Cut Area & a single Oystercatcher on Main Bay Islands.

A plethora of new arrivals today (23/03) including 2 Willow warblers, Blackcap, 5 Redshank and a Little Ringed Plover. But no sign so far of the Black -necked Grebe which has been present on Main Bay for a couple of days. A Raven reported over Big ‘ole at mid-day hot on the heels of 2 over yesterday so worth keeping an eye out for.

5/9/22 15:30 – 16:30 Spoonbill flash held x2 Snipe, x2 Spoonbill, x2 Cattle Egret, x1 Curlew, x3 Ruff x3 Greenshank. The Moat held x3 Spotted Redshank, x1 Greenshank, x1 Wood Sandpiper. I didn’t see it there was reports of an Osprey overhead that was 1st at St Audan’s at 14.30 is.

16/4/22 am Flashes. Tatty Red Kite flew west about 0900 moulting tail and inner flight feathers. Did not look like any of our regulars. Whitethroat was new in in scrub by moat.
Marsh harrier,10 Buzzard and peregrine were other raptors seen. Plenty of regular warblers present with Cettis seemingly everywhere you stop and listen for any length of time.
Reported Lagoons 2 Bittern and Reed warbler. Village bay – 8 Common terns

Ian.Thete are quite va few places. On the tips the southeast corner of South lagoon, by the gate between north and south lagoon and along the north slope sit by the 3 benches there is one in that area too.

41 Whooper Swans departed Main Bay at 17.40. Headed off east before turning back west, got to Lin Dike when they turned and headed north.
4 Avocets & 2 Oystercatcher also on Main Bay.

Wed 23/3 14:00 – 17:00. a pair of Black-necked Grebes together on Big Lagoon on the Coal tips trail. x2 Bittern booming from opposite ends of Coal tips lagoons. Green Woodpeckers around up there. x1 Little Ringed Plover on small spit on spoonbill flash. x2 Avocet on Hickson’s & an adult Spoonbill dropped in there to feed. Couldnt find gargaeny pair there. Peregrine around Lin Dyke car park. Plenty of Small Tortoiseshells about and 1 Comma under the old railway bridge.

Rangering this afternoon. Willow Tit at VC feeders. Siskin on alders on discovery trail. Lin Dike had 2x Great Egret, 2x Kingfisher, Marsh Harrier and Buzzard with a Peregrine on a pylon. Lots of Pintail on Flashes, plus 12+ Curlew. 4+ Common Gulls on Big Hole.

07/12/21.am 0800-1100. At least 11 Red kites across the site. There were 6 together in the Beckfield area alone circling a road casualty. 11 Pintail and Great Egret on flashes. 60 Wigeon, 11 Pintail and 15 Curlew c200 redwing and 40 Blackbirds on Flashes. Main water bodies- 10 Great created
Grebe, 6 Little grebe and Kingfisher. Still 4+ Siskin in amongst Goldfinch flock along cut lane.

23/11/21 0830-1030 Flashes. 2 Great White Egrets and 1 Little egret. Immature male Marsh harrier and peregrine disrupting things! 12 Goldeneye and 13 Pintails. Arrow lane was alive with Redwings and a couple of water rails were annoyed by my presence. Male Stonechat was just behind New Flash and 2 Cettis calling along the road. C110 pink feet flew east at about 0930 hours.

Hi, I’m just trying to find out some information about a possible sighting of a falcon seen on the reserve. The falcon was wearing Jesses (leather straps) and a bell so it’s an lost or escaped falcon. I don’t know if any of your members can confirm this.

5/10/21 am Flashes 0800-1100 2 Spoonbill (1ad male other was interestingly a 2cy bird – first immature seen for ages and first day not seen any juvs for a couple of months or more!) Great white egret (unringed) , 2 Cattle egret, Garganey, Black-tailed godwit and 2 Ruff. 5 Stonechat south of new flash (9 here later by Johnp) Also 2 cc marsh harrier. 8 House martin, 30+ meadow pipits.
Main bay 1200-1330hrs approx. Took photos of gull on main bay put out at time as possible sub adult Caspian gull as bill on extreme of range from my limited experience. YNU rarity member and gull expert responded to photos and agreed with Id. Ageing also problematic as appeared most likely to be 3rd winter but lacked both tail band and secondary bar. Also single pinkfoot in with Grey lag flock.

Caspian gull came into Main bay roost at 1715hrs.
3 Hobbies over flashes and peregrine present on Flashes. At least 22 Buzzard and 8 Red kites over site.
2 reed warblers on southern lagoon. 2 Black -tailed godwits and 2 Ruff on Spoonbill flash and Green Sandpiper on Main Bay.

25/09/21 Lagoons/ Flashes am. 2 Cattle egret, 2 Great Egret and 11 Spoonbill. 8 Black -tailed godwits and 2 Ruff and Green Sandpiper. 15 Pintail ( across reserve) 3 Hobby Peregrine, Marsh harrier (cc) and Bittern flew from south to north lagoon. Meadow pipits were moving south on a broad front ( so no doubt many missed) counted 180 and small movement of swallows also (45) with another 20 over Main bay in the evening. Also 1 grey wagtail south and 50 Pinkfeet SE at about 1230hrs, and a welcome flock of 80 Linnet by Big Hole.
The hybrid fem red-crested Pochard x tufted was on village bay.
In the evening the Caspian gull again came into roost. It arrived early at 1655 and was showing well on the islands until 1730 when it abruptly flew east towards Village bay and was lost to view. At least 10 Chiffchaffs and cettis singing across the site. All in all a very good day.

Village: at least 2 pairs of house martin still feeding young.

GWE and a Green Sandpiper both flew west. Nuthatch, 2 Blackcaps and c5 Chiffchaff in copse. Wheatear on bale’s in field by pickup were the highlights.

Roost numbers well down. 150 GBB ,50Herring and 35 LBB. Also 2 Egyptian geese and a pintail. But gulls still flying in in the gloom as I left.

An Osprey flew in from NW at Newton circled VC area and then went south at 1055hrs.
Main bay roost 1 Yellow-legged Gull (1st winter) GBb 250, Herring, 450 LBB 40. 1 pintail.

Excellent evening at Lin Dike!
2 Hobbies, Kestrel, Buzzard, Cream Crown Marsh Harrier, 2 Cattle Egrets, Great White Egret, 4 Pintail, Green Sandpiper, Snipe, 2 Juvenile Spotted Redshanks, 2 Cetti’s Warblers and a very vocal unidentified large Pipit flew South over Arrow Lane. After comparing Pipit calls it sounded more like Richard’s Pipit than anything else but cannot be certain. Very frustrating but the one that got away.

Great white egret, on spoonbill then flew to moat. Cream crown Marsh Harrier on flashes. Whitethroat 2, Blackcap 1, Willow warbler 1, Chiffchaff 2, Snipe 3, Dunlin 1, Red kite 1 plus a red underwing moth.

29/08/21. 2 Cattle egret were perched on the usual bushes this am with occasional forays into field between New Flash and Moat. Adult and juv Spoonbill on moat. 2 Peregrine Linn dyke area. Only waders I saw were lapwings and curlew (1)

Two adult Cattle Egrets made the day, when they flew into the highland cattle area, adjacent to Spoonbill Flash at 7pm. After feeding amongst the cows until 8.30pm, showing on and off, they then flew towards the Moat, presumably to roost. Common Sand, LRP, Little Egret, Willow Tit and Peregrine also in the Lin Dike area.

09/08/21Flashes 8-9am 2 Garganey on New Flash, with 2 Lt egrets , 3 Wigeon,4 Snipe and 4 Spoonbill. A birder reported 2 Cattle egret from Spoonbill flash area. He mentioned he had walked down Lin Dike path and said it was like RSPB had given up on this end of the reserve. This is the third set of negative comments i have received over the weekend
Newton lagoons/ Moat area 1230-1400.6 Spoonbill ,1 Cattle egret and the late ,rather boisterous, family of Little egrets (perhaps 10-12 with others still dotted around the heronry,)20 juvenile little grebes on lagoons.
Whole site- 600+ Gadwall and 9 Red kites.

07/08/21 Additional Spoonbill nesting pair noted (making 8) in western section of heronry. Site invisible except 2 young apparent when adult arrived. 1 Cattle egret noted roosting on the north side.
Other sightings, Juv Marsh harrier, Black -tailed godwits,3 LRP & Common Sandpiper. VP found 2 Garganey on Spoonbill flash in afternoon and showed well in early evening before the rain came. Plenty of little grebes across site (c50) and parent seen with 2 very small yg on north lagoon. 1 juv perergrine on pylon by Linn dyke

2 Little gull (2cy) main bay this am. Got a call from Mike Barnett at swilly that a Honey Buzzard was coming this way. Fortunately was by New Flash and picked it up distantly to SW and would’ve said it was other side of Barnsdale road. For a while it changed to NE track and following it in scope it appeared as though it would come directly towards me. Unfortunately, it changed to a northerly tack ( which I would’ve said put it over Allerton By water and I lost it behind some roadside bushes) and couldn’t refind it. When checked my watch was about 0930hrs.

28/04/21 am. In addition to Keith’s Dunlin. Other waders noted were, 1 LRP, 1 RP, 1 c.sand & 21 Avocet. Also 2 White wag and 1 yellow wag.There was a steady increase in Arctic terns in the am with c7 present when left at 1230 Goosander (drake) and 2 Wigeon also on islands. New Flash area was quiet but. KB had a Garden warbler by Iron Bridge.

Ring Ouzel has to be the star bird today on East slope of the coal tips viewed from Roy Taylor Trail looking towards Big Hole.

Jon B had 9 Yellow Wagtails on flashes but no sign of the Blue-headed.

Really nice couple of hours down Lin Dike on Sunday afternoon, Ad.Spoonbill flew up from the middle of the marsh towards The Moat, prompting a Great White Egret to stick it’s head out of the deep ditch. 2 Barnacle Geese and 2 Egyptian Geese were on the marsh.c100 Sand Martin over Spoonbill Flash, 2 competing Blackcaps singing at the north end of Lin Dike and a welcomed 4 Swallows over New Flash to finish off.

From Lin Dike around the coal tips and back: Pair of Pintail, Peregrine, numerous Cettis, Chiffchaff, Spoonbill on moat, Green Woodpecker, Curlew. Heard a Bittern briefly on coal tips.

18/03/21 am. Quite alot of Kingfisher activity- at least 3 down cut and 2+ Main Bay. Cut lane area 16 Snipe, Cetti’s, Treecreeper in song and drumming gs woodpecker (also at vc) Stonechat (fem) on lagoons and 2 Cettis too. Flashes -c75 Wigeon and 12 Pintail and Waderless apart from 1 Lapwing flying over!

Nice to see 2 Kittiwake with 300+ Black-headed Gulls on Main Bay thanks to John G for finding them. 2 Oystercatcher and 2 Avocet on Islands. Spoonbill still on New Flash late afternoon and 2 Pink-footed Geese in adjacent field.

Hooray! Back to Fairburn Rangering. Spoonbill on New Flash as per John B. plus 2 Common Gull & 2 Green Woodpecker at Big Hole. Topped off with a Willow Tit on the Visitor Centre feeders.

Had a walk between Ledston and Newton yesterday evening, 3 Red Kites and 2 Grey Partridge were the highlights. 16 Little Egrets came into roost in the Moat whilst 1other fed on New Flash.

Whooper adult on Main bay at 1100hrs. Associating with a small group of mutes (perhaps 10) and flew off with them west down the river. At least 3 Goldcrest on r/bank ( but none with a white eye flash.) Little else of note. C75 Wigeon and 6 Pintail on flashes. Willow tit singing in ravine up from kingfisher screen. Rspb work party appeared to be fencing off the fishing butts down Cut Lane.

Late walk down River Trail 28 Feb, Teal/Goldeneye/Mallard/Gadwall & Shelduck on river 2 x Kingfishers/Green Woodpecker and Barn Owl on far side of river 17.00 a couple of Cetti’s Warblers calling.

145 Pink-footed Geese flew West over flashes at about lunchtime. 2 Egyptian Geese still feeding in field between New Flash and Spoonbill Flash. Buzzards, Red Kites, Peregrine, Sparrowhrawk were all noted and a Cream Crowned Marsh Harrier circled high above the coal tips.

18 Oystercatcher this morning on flashes a further 11 flew West over Moat per John G. 73 Curlew also on flashes and at least 2 Snipe. Plenty of GBB and Herring Gulls, few Common Gulls and a single LBB gul. Red Kite and Kestrel were the only Birds of Prey to note.
